MSM Benefits Asthma, Arthritis Sufferers

About four years ago, my Mom asked me to look into something that would help alleviate her asthma. She had suffered with it for over 30 years and felt that she would most certainly die from an asthma attack.

I started researching and came across
MSM (Methyl-sulfonyl-methane), an organic sulfur (macro-mineral) that is found naturally in plants, animals and the human body. It's the fourth most plentiful mineral in the body and utilized in every cell.

It allows the cells to be more permeable, therefore allowing nutrients to enter more easily. MSM improves the cells insulin sensitivity and enhances glucose uptake into cells.

Sulfur is essential for healthy hair, skin and nails. It stimulates bile secretion and helps to maintain proper brain function. When combined with vitamin C, it disinfects the blood and resists bacteria, parasites and fungus. MSM helps the muscles, skin and lungs maintain flexibility while controlling the body's inflammation.

One of the most powerful ways adequate sulfur levels can impact the body is when new cells are created, sulfur is incorporated into the cell's wall allowing it to be more permeable to nutrients. Without sulfur, nutrients have difficulty entering the cell wall.

Sulfur originates from the evaporation of the waters of the Oceans and through precipitation is then found in plants. If rain water isn't used in farming, but substituted with city or purified water then sulfur won't be found in the produce.

Some plant sources of sulfur are Asparagus, Garlic, Onions and Green Leafy Vegetables especially Water Cress and Swiss Chard. It's best to eat these raw and uncooked because sulfur is easily destroyed by heat.

Supplementing with MSM can benefit arthritis sufferers by improving joint flexibility, reducing stiffness, swelling and pain, increasing circulation and cell vitality.

Sulfur is useful to asthmatics by preventing inflammation and regulating the fluid that covers the airway surface of the lungs. It allows the lungs to be more flexible, increasing lung capacity. MSM actually helps to heal the lungs, not just alleviate symptons.

Methylsulfonylmethane is considered extremely safe and toxicity is virtually unheard of. In fact, no toxic effects were shown in humans given up to 1 gram per kilogram of body weight (70 grams or more) per day for 30 days.

My Mom started taking 1 - 2 grams (1 gram is equal to 1,000 mg) daily, working up to 8 grams for a period of 3 to 4 months then weaning back down. She went from using her "puffer" everyday to never using it. She doesn't take any steroids or other medications anymore and is free from asthma for the last 4 years.

Side Note: sulfur should be broken into at least two servings a day since its half life is only 12 hours in the body.

Some other conditions that can benefit from adding sulfur supplementation are:
  • Diabetes
  • Allergies
  • Wound Healing
  • Pain Relief
  • Eye Problems
  • Cramps (and PMS)
  • Stress
  • Snoring
  • Skin Conditions including psoriasis
  • Parasitic Infestation
  • Toxic Metal Poisoning

  2. MSM is said to eliminate asthma completely in 60 percent to 70 percent of asthmatics. Full results could take three to six months, but hopefully symptom relief will also occur with MSM.

  8. I've read that the sulfur gas could exacerbate my asthma. We live in an area with high sulfur (rotten egg odor) in the water. Is this good or bad for my asthma?

  9. @John & Gail, I cannot comment on your situation. From my research and my clients' use of Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), all results have been positive. Make sure to look for a very pure form of MSM.

  13. I'm a severe asthmatic. I just got back from vacation where I stayed at an inn with sulfur-water coming from the inn's well and its faucets. The innkeepers provided bottled water for guests to drink, but I opted for the well water having heard that it helps asthma.....but I forgot about that. Now, a month later it has just occurred to me that I haven't had to use my inhaler since that trip 5 weeks ago! You decide. Anybody know where I can buy 'sulfur water'?

  14. I agree. I take 2tsp in the morning and 2 more in the evening because there are days when I see heavy chemtrails in the sky and their goes my flare-up. Did I say I have angioedema which is a rare condition. This helps for that as well so I don't get the intestinal infammation anymore. This year was the first time in 7 years that I got the intestinal inflammation. This month was the first time the sky has been hazy to the point that the blue sky looks greyish. These chemtrails has been going on a lot this month and this month has been the worst allergy month that led me into the ER. So I've been taking vitamin c, msm, and magnesium and lots of water. I'm actually feeling better today. I can't believe this is happening in california and I urge you guys to continue taking msm. Heck add vitamin c as well. My daughter is doing well just off of taking vitamin c and not pills only chewables work for us for some reason. But she has to take at least 500mg to 1000mg a day. She once had a flare up when she went outside and I knew that her inhalers doesn't always work so I gave her 2 vit c chewables and then I gave her a 1tsp of msm powder and dropped it under her tongue. Gave her a bottle of water to swish it around her mouth and she swallowed. Yes it's bitter but the trick that I got from someone online is to place it under your tongue which works the BEST for me. I couldn't blieve it worked for her that quick. Within a few minutes she was able to breathe. NO INHALER!! take that big pharma. I've been learning so much and I'm a believe of what our government is doing to us. It's so sad but it's so true. ALl this have been revealed to me within a year or so and its been happeing ever since I got baptized last year. I am so much closer to the Lord because of it. It's amazing how much we can help and teach one another as long if we're open about these issues that are happening. It's written in the bible people.

  17. Tried MSM for the first time couple of days ago for asthma based on this blog post and recommendations from other sites. It has made a tremendous difference in the way my lungs "feel." The nagging heaviness and weird ache I usually associate with asthma are gone. I mean gone, not just diminished.

I am taking 2 grams split between breakfast and supper. I may try implementing a third gram at lunch, but I don't feel it is necessary right now. I may also experiment with taking a gram after exercise or after an allergy flare up as that is the time my lungs feel the most stressed. The best way I could describe the benefits I have felt so far with MSM is that it makes my lungs feel stable, like they are calm and not irritated. A definite plus in my book. I hope with continued use that I can put most of my asthma experience in the rear view mirror.

I will definitely recommend this to anyone with a nagging respiratory condition or illness. I would also recommend turmeric and NAC to anyone with an inflammatory lung condition. They have also been a big help for me.
